fibromyalgia Myths
fibromyalgia myths are about as ubiquitous as fibromyalgia symptoms themselves. There are so many unknowns in fibromyalgia, how can one tell “fibromyalgia facts” from fiction? Here’s a simple list of fibromyalgia myths, with the facts to distinguish between what is true, and what’s false.

Right now In America there are more than 6 million people of all ages suffering from fibromyalgia. In essence, two out of every 100 Americans you meet has it. 80% to 90% of them are women, which is why some call this a “women’s disease”.

Research also shows that when diagnosed with this disease, there is a strong likelihood that the person has a family member that has also been diagnosed with it. This denotes that there may be genetic factors in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a familiar word today. Television and magazine advertisements flood our airwaves and glossy pages, heightening public awareness. Some promise cures, while others just proclaim aid in alleviating certain symptoms. Well, fourteen years ago, this was certainly not the case.

the director of the National Databank for Rheumatic Diseases and the lead author of the 1990 paper that first defined the diagnostic guidelines for fibromyalgia, says he has become cynical and discouraged about the diagnosis. He now considers the condition a physical response to stress, depression, and economic and social anxiety.

Even after numerous tests with your doctor, do they say “we can’t find anything wrong?” You are not alone. Six million Americans suffer from the effects of fibromyalgia. But the sad fact is most of them have been told they’re crazy, lazy, or just depressed.

The name fibromyalgia, introduced by Muhammad Yunus MD and his colleagues in 1981, literally means pain in the muscles and tissue. No ethnic group seems any more likely to have fibromyalgia;however women develop it approximately 8 times more often than do men. While the medical community does not yet understand the pathology underlying fibromyalgia, more and more information about this condition is becoming known.

The second myth of this affliction is that you can medicate it away. I have seen literally hundreds of women who were medicated into oblivion, to the point where they appeared drunk. The main problem was that they still felt the pain, even though they were full of pain pills and muscle relaxers. There is no silver bullet, no magic pill to fix this problem.

In fact, many of the current health recommendations are causing an increase in health problems. Several leading health researchers point to the fact that these recommendations are often driven by certain industries who have vested interests; namely profits, at stake.

As a former student of natural therapies, and having now been involved in the health & fitness industry for over 14 years, it is my intention to shed some light on 10 of the most common health myths – as controversial as they may be!

Natural Treatments For fibromyalgia

fibromyalgia is a condition that can cause aches and pains all over the body from head to toe. It mainly causes pain in joints and bones, but it can also cause pain in the muscles. fibromyalgia can effects both men in women mainly above the age of 50, but it can also effect in younger years if server trauma was present

Or possibly even illness. People living with fibromyalgia do not have to live in pain or take prescription drugs to help treat their condition if they do not want to. There are several natural remedies out there that can help treat and ease the pain and discomfort of fibromyalgia.

One of the very best natural treatments to use to help alternatively treat fibromyalia is a proper diet consisting of a lot fresh veggies and fruits. Veggies and fruits contain antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and fluids that help hydrated, nourish, and protect our joints, muscles, organs, and whole entire body from illness, inflammation, and pain both inside and out. It is also important to drink lots of water each day to keep our bodies well hydrated so they do not become achy and in great pain.

Another great alternative way to treat fibromyalgia is by doing low impact exercise such as yoga. Yoga helps relieve stress and inflammation in the body which also helps reduce pain and body aches. Yoga helps stretch out the muscles, joints, tissues, and ligaments in our bodies gently and effectively. Stretching out body’s helps keep our bodies lose and pain free instead of all tight, stiff, and achy. It also helps keep our immune systems working their best so they can fight off illnesses and infections that might be causing the fibromyalgia in the first place. Simply doing yoga also helps maintain a healthy weight and keeps our blood flowing properly so we can have good circulation throughout our bodies. If our blood isn’t flowing properly in our bodies they can become cold and stiff causing aches and pains all over our body.

Another important way to naturally treat fibromyalgia is getting a good nights rest. If our bodies don’t get the proper rest they need they tend to become weak, achy, ill, and fatigued. If you seem to have trouble falling asleep at night become your health condition is keeping you up trying taking an herbal remedy called valerian root. It is a natural sedative that helps naturally relaxing the body and mind so you can fall asleep easily and comfortably. Another herbal remedy to use when trying to get to sleep is chamomile tea. Chamomile tea is very relaxing and soothing to sip on before bedtime and it helps calm the mind and the body right down while hydrating it so it doesn’t become dehydrated causing your body to be in even more pain.

One of the best ways to relieve immediate fibromyalgia pain is by using and massaging arnica gel right into the area of your body that hurts, or better yet find a massage therapy place that will use arnica gel or oil on you during a massage. The arnica gel or oil helps relieve joint, muscles, and ligament aches and pains while relieving the inflammation because it contains thymol which is a derivative. Arnica gel can even help speed the healing of bruises, wounds, sprains, and broken bones.

The other way I know of to treat and relieve fibromyalgia is by soaking in hot sea salt baths. Warm sea salt baths help relax the muscles, joints, tissues, and ligaments in the body naturally. They even help relieve stress and calm your mind so you can simply relax. Warm sea salt baths help relieve pain and body aches. They can even relieve body chills which can sometimes cause pains all over the body. A simple 30 minute or hour bath can do the trick when it comes to relieving your fibromyalgia.

There are many alternative ways out there to treat fibromayalgia pain, but at least you have a handful of them now too try. I hope those of you suffering from fibromyalgia can find some relief with some of these natural treats.

Drugs Approved As Fibromyalgia Treatment

Drugs Approved As fibromyalgia Treatment

fibromyalgia is a very painful condition that needs to be treated immediately. There are some approved drugs for this condition that can bring fibromyalgia under control. Let us have a brief overview on these approved drugs for the treatment of Fibromyalgia.

1. Lyrica- it is also referred as pregabalin and it was the first approved medication for Fibromyalgia treatment. It showed significant improvement in fatigue, sleep, pain and quality of life. This drug is also approved for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy.

2. Cymbalta- it is also known as duloxetine and approved for the treatment of Fibromyalgia in June 2008. It is classified as a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). Both these are neurotransmitters that are deficient in people suffering from Fibromyalgia. SNRI makes it available to the brain.

3.

Savella- it is a new drug in the US market. It works as an antidepressant that is similar like that of Cymbalta with the only exception that it is the first drug that boosts norepinephrine more as compared to serotonin. This drug was found more effective than a placebo. It was well tolerated and no deaths or side effects were found.

4. JZP-6 (sodium oxybate) – research shows that this medication improved the quality of sleep and decreased the pain of the Fibromyalgia patients significantly. This drug is a depressant of the central nervous system and it helps the person to achieve the deeper stages i.e. level 3 and level 4 of sleep.

5. Effirma or oral Flupertine- it is useful to treat the severe pain occurring as a result of surgery, liver disease, trauma or cancer. It not only treats the pain, but also improves fatigue, sleep disturbance, mood, cognitive problems and overall functioning of the body.

6. Antidepressants- they increase the level of some chemicals in the brain along with the neurotransmitter serotonin and norepinephrine, the stress hormone. Both these are found very low in people suffering from Fibromyalgia.

7. Narcotics/ Opiates- these drugs offer great relief. It includes Percocet, Vicodin and Oxycontin.

Safety of drugs used:- Before you take any drug to treat your problems, you have to check the following things:

? Ensure that the drug is being prescribed by your doctor and he is aware of the nutritional supplements you are taking.

? If you see any adverse reactions to any particular medicine you are taking, report it immediately to the doctor.

Controversial Aspects of fibromyalgia Pain

fibromyalgia pain and fatigue are the most common and intense symptoms that occur to people who suffer from the condition. Statistics indicate that an overwhelming number of 3.7 million Americans are confronted with fibromyalgia pain and other specific symptoms. Fibromyalgia is a neurological chronic condition that causes recidivating, intense pain in the muscles and interconnected soft tissues such as tendons and ligaments. Many people disregard fibromyalgia pain and fatigue, considering that they are self-induced symptoms, the product of people’s imagination. These conceptions, however, are far from the actual truth. Medical research results reveal that although there are psychological aspects involved in the development of fibromyalgia, the condition occurs due to neurological dysfunctions, and undoubtedly, fibromyalgia pain is real!

Fibromyalgia pain is described by patients in a multitude of ways: aching, burning, sour, radiating, stabbing or pressure. Although people with the disorder perceive fibromyalgia pain in a different way, they claim to always feel a certain degree of pain and discomfort in the muscles. Fibromyalgia pain is accompanied by a sensation of fatigue, discomfort, numbness or tingling.

The cause for recidivating fibromyalgia pain is considered to be abnormal brain activity. Medical scientists sustain that the presence of certain brain dysfunctions determine a pronounced increase of nervous excitability in the entire body. Unlike healthy people, patients with fibromyalgia perceive external stimuli in a very intense way. For instance, many people who suffer from fibromyalgia develop a sensibility to light and temperature as a consequence of nervous dysfunctions. Scientific experiments have revealed the fact that in the case of people with the disorder, fibromyalgia pain is emphasized by abnormal brain activity. When exposed to a stimulus of the same intensity, people with fibromyalgia might perceive a sensation of intense pain, while the majority of healthy people have no reactions to that particular stimulus.

]]>

An interesting aspect of fibromyalgia is that all people with the disorder feel pain in the same body regions. Fibromyalgia pain is mainly located in specific spots on the body, called trigger points. There are nine pairs of trigger points on the body, and they are located in the following regions: the lower region of the skull, the back of the neck, the upper back, the mid-back, the lower back, the shoulders, the region of the buttocks, the elbows and knees and the region of the hips. The areas that surround the points where the fibromyalgia pain is perceived at maximum intensity are called tender points.

These trigger points and tender points have a major role in revealing the presence of fibromyalgia. Due to the fact that most physical examinations and routine laboratory analysis aren’t able to trace any signs of the disorder, by checking if the patient feels intense pain in these specific fibromyalgia pain regions, an appropriate diagnose can be established.

Although people with fibromyalgia mostly complain about muscular pain and a generalized state of exhaustion through the entire body, the fact is that the disorder can generate a lot more symptoms, some considered to be very serious. For instance, people that have been suffering from fibromyalgia for long periods of time may suffer from short-term memory loss, decreased ability of sustaining physical and mental effort, poor concentration, migraines, high blood pressure and accelerated heart activity.

Fibromyalgia is a serious condition and speed is vital in detecting its presence. Although at the time being there is no specific cure for fibromyalgia, most symptoms can be overcome and the patients’ general health condition can be substantially improved by following certain therapies and treatments. Fibromyalgia pain, fatigue, cognitive dysfunctions and poor mental abilities can be corrected through the means of an appropriate treatment, a good therapeutic program, healthy lifestyle and diet.
