fibromyalgia tender points or trigger points Can be best identified by the acute pain felt in different areas of the body where by feeling around you would be able to feel a sharp pain or tender point that may feel similar to a bruise.

Feeling pain in about 10 to 20 particular spots on the body is explained as just one of the two major symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome.

What Could Be the Causes for Fibromyalgia Tender Points or Trigger Points?

The opinions of the experts are divided on this topic. Some say that this happens because of weakening of the muscles at certain spots but are not able to say what could be the cause of such uneven weakening of these muscles.

Why does pain not affect all muscles in all spots instead of certain areas of the body?

          ]]>

Some say that these painful Fibromyalgia trigger points or tender Points happen due to either too much oxidation plus the fact that there is too little oxygen available. Based on this theory anti-oxidants have been added to the diet recommended for Fibromyalgia with excellent results. The excellent results point to the fact that this theory might be correct.

What Is Recommended For Curing the Pain of Fibromyalgia Tender Points or Trigger Points

Unfortunately, there is no cure for this ailment. However, proper symptomatic treatment is very efficient in controlling the pain. The best and most popular treatment is adding anti-oxidants to your diet. There are different anti-oxidants in different foods and you would require your nutritionist to work out a diet which includes a massive dose of these if you want to get rid of the pain.

Fibromyalgia Symptoms can be greatly reduced by bringing exercise into your routine to bring oxygen to your muscles.By using Fibromyalgia and exercise formulas 20 to 30 minutes a day can curtail the pain felt in the affected areas and fight the most severe fibromyalgia symptoms. The exercise should be moderate.

If you serious about feeling better than nothing can help more than sticking to your diet and exercise plan. Some people stop their plan and regiment mostly because they are feeling better and feel that they no longer need it,so definitely keep it going.Your muscles will eventually develop a deficiency and you’ll more than likely have to start over from square one again.

fibromyalgia is an ailment which causes chronic pain in the body. Despite ongoing efforts by modern science, causes of fibromyalgia remain a great puzzle. Fibromyalgia is a very complex disorder and factors causing it remain a mystery. There are many symptoms related to fibromyalgia but leaves no physical traces which can help in diagnosis of this condition. Those suffering from fibromyalgia appear to be perfectly normal on being examined physically. Determining or singling out one single cause from among the many causes of fibromyalgia in an individual is very difficult if not impossible. The physical symptoms of fibromyalgia may include headache, dizziness, grinding teeth, facial pain, breathing problems, numbness or tingling sensations in extremities. Fibromyalgia pain medications render relief from all these painful situations, but they carry side effects of varying degrees.

Fibromyalgia symptoms not physical in nature is headed by depression, and could range from any of the following – memory loss, stress, confusion, mood swings, or anxiety. Perplexing symptoms and enshrouded in mystery to modern science makes fibromyalgia information an essential tool in recognizing and identifying this disease. Experts have yet to find any exact causes for fibromyalgia. But most experts agree towards a medical term – central sensitization or lower tolerance for pain. This is caused by the pain signals in the brain making a greater than normal impact on the body. It may surprise you but injuries of many types also list among the various causes of fibromyalgia.

Medications like muscle relaxants help decrease pain in people suffering from fibromyalgia but they cause side effects on prolonged use.

Most over the counter and prescription fibromyalgia pain medications carry side effects. This has prompted many people to go for alternative treatments for fibromyalgia which render wider benefits to the body in addition they offer no side effects. Most alternative treatments for fibromyalgia involve exercise. Gentle exercises including swimming and stretching help relieve fibromyalgia pain. But many patients avoid exercise as they find it boring or it tends to hurt them due to oversensitivity in the body. Massages are also popular among fibromyalgia patients as they offer a less strenuous way of achieving relief than exercising. Changing one’s diet and appropriate sleep are also effective approaches as alternative treatments for this disease. This approach can include supplements additions to daily diet as they aid in strengthening the immune system and along with bones and muscles. As fibromyalgia is counted to be a psychosomatic disease it also involves behavioral therapy. Here, doctors educate the patient in identifying specific areas of the body where the pain originates from. Besides, there are other natural remedies for fibromyalgia which have proven very beneficial to its patients, these include: meditation, yoga, exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Fibromyalgia can be best dealt with a combination of some or all the treatments discussed here. Once we identify a treatment that works best we can concentrate our efforts to get the most by making a strict treatment regimen and enjoy better health by sticking to it.

Is Lyrica a Good Treatment for fibromyalgia?

If you suffer from fibromyalgia, you know how debilitating and persistent the symptoms can be! You may experience persistent muscle aches, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and frequent stiffness and joint discomfort. The
symptoms can be so severe and restricting that it’s difficult to complete simple daily tasks or hold down a full time job. Previously, the only effective class of drugs recommended for initial treatment of fibromyalgia have been antidepressants which don’t always provide adequate symptom relief. Plus, antidepressants can cause significant side effects in users including dry mouth, dizziness, excessive sleepiness, anxiety, and weight gain which can limit their usage.

A recent double-blind, controlled fibromyalgia study, presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting, looked at the effects of a drug called pregabalin or Lyrica on the symptoms of 745 patients who had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The drug, although not yet approved specifically for use in fibromyalgia, was approved for use in the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia in 2004. This drug has proven to be effective and well tolerated for treatment of these two conditions and have been well tolerated, in general.

In this current study, Lyrica was found to relieve the chronic pain associated with fibromyalgia and improve the general quality of life for persons diagnosed with this difficult to treat disorder.Patients began to experience improvement in their levels of pain and fatigue as early as the first week on the new drug treatment. By the end of the study, many patients reported up to a 50% reduction in pain after treatment with Lyrica when compared with the placebo group. Lyrica also seemed to have positive effects on the sleep patterns of fibromyalgia sufferers and helped to reduce daytime fatigue. The most frequent side effects associated with the use of Lyrica were dizziness and excessive sleepiness.

If further studies support use of this drug to treat fibromyalgia, the consequences. could be far reaching. This disorder affects around 6 millions Americans and can cause significant disability and loss of productivity of untreated. At the present time, the cause of this disease has been undetermined.

This particular study was sponsored by the pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, which has an application pending for approval of Lyrica for treatment of fibromyalgia symptoms. If this drug is approved and goes into widespread use, could it be the answer to successfully treating fibromyalgia? Millions of fibromyalgia sufferers who experience symptoms on a daily basis certainly hope so!

Lyrica: A New Treatment for fibromyalgia Symptoms

What is fibromyalgia? It’s an arthritis like condition that causes diffuse muscle pains and excessive fatigue in the sufferer. Surprisingly enough, it affects as many as 2-3% of the general population, primarily middle aged women, and is an important cause of missed days from work and loss of productivity. Previously, there hasn’t been an FDA approved fibromyalgia medication available to treat this condition. Prior treatments for fibromyalgia, focusing on reducing levels of pain through pain management, have been relatively ineffective in most patients. Plus, new treatments have been difficult to develop as the cause of this perplexing disease is still unknown.

Fortunately, the FDA just announced the approval of a new fibromyalgia medication called Lyrica to treat the symptoms of this condition.. Interestingly enough, this is not a new drug to the medical community. It’s been used to treat a variety of other conditions unrelated to fibromyalgia including pain associated with diabetic neuropathy, pain associated with shingles and treatment of partial seizures. This would be the drug’s first approval specifically for the treatment of fibromyalgia symptoms.

Before approving this drug, the FDA looked at the results of randomized, controlled, double-blind studies on over 1800 people before giving their support and approval for the use of Lyrica in fibromyalgia patients. This fibromyalgia medication was shown to decrease pain levels in patients affected with the condition as well as improve their ability to carry out their daily activities. Reduction in pain levels were seen as early as the first week of treatment and were associated with significant improvement in sleep patterns as well as improvement in levels of fatigue experienced during the daytime hours. Adverse effects included difficulty concentrating, dizziness, and daytime sleepiness. There were also some reports of visual changes, weight gain, and dry mouth in patients enrolled in the studies. The side effects experienced by the patients in the studies appeared to be dose dependent.

Could this be the answer that fibromyalgia sufferers have been looking for? It’s too early to tell, but the preliminary test results look optimistic. If you or someone you know suffers from this condition, you may want to ask your family doctor to tell you more about this newly approved fibromyalgia medication and ask him or her if it would be right for you.

Radical fibromyalgia Treatment

Applying Fibromyalgia treatment is crucial if you want to get rid of this debilitating condition once and for all. Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue are utterly painful conditions and the agony of living in a painful body varies from person to person. No day is like the one before and no one can tell if tomorrow is a good day or a bad day.

While many have given up on believing that it is possible to find treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome treatment and Fibromyalgia, I am living proof that it can be done. I was first diagnosed with Chronic Immune Deficiency Disorder, perhaps because I walked around with a low grade fever that ranged between 100 and 101 degrees for a period of over 2 years. No one could quite figure out why. People with Chronic Fatigue may have no pain or less pain than those with Fibromyalgia syndrome.

Radical fibromyalgia treatment. is essential and absolutely necessary if you’re serious about kicking this condition in the bud. You have many choices when dealing with Fibromyalgia:

You can do nothing and whine about it and join Fibromyalgia support groups that mostly do just that – support Fibromyalgia by talking about it even more.
You can mask the pain temporarily by taking various medications ranging from over the counter pain medications to prescription drugs. Taking medications is not radical, it only makes things worse over the long run.
You can do only one thing here and one over there, but never do a series of things which are needed to get radical Fibromyalgia treatment

So what is radical Fibromyalgia treatment?

You must stop feeling sorry for yourself. This includes stop talking about it at any cost. Doing so only multiplies its negative, draining energy. I have dedicated an entire chapter in my book to the power of our words and another chapter on creating positive affirmations and another chapter to the power of our thoughts.
You must dedicate yourself and set your intention to get healing once and for all. Not getting healing is out of the question, it’s impossible for you not to find the cure, in fact you are dedicated to finding the cure for your own Fibromyalgia condition (and I am here to help).
You must be willing to do whatever it takes to get better. Whether this means to apply a new exercise regime or being willing to eliminate some food groups temporarily. The longest chapter in my book is about diet and which foods groups promote your Fibromyalgia symptoms and which ones will initiate the internal healing process.

There are too many steps to list in one article, which promote ultimate healing. Radical fibromyalgia. treatment is necessary to heal a condition that took a life time to manifest in your beautiful body temple. I share many more steps and metaphysical and spiritual healing methods in my book and on my blog. To join our blogging community simply visit our website or join our Facebook fan page.

Learning to Cope and Live with fibromyalgia

fibromyalgia is one of the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed syndromes there is in the medical field because there are still so many people, and doctors that dismiss this syndrome because there are no difinitive test ro prove if someone has this syndrome due to the fact that so many of it’s sysmtoms can fall under other illnesses or syndromes. It is also dismisses as a syndrome because it is still a mystery as to what exactly causes fibromyalgia or where it comes from.

However the people that have to live with Fibromyaglia can tell you that the pain and symptoms are very real, and it is extremely miseriable to have. I would not wish this type of Chronic Pain on no one, not even my worst enemy. Fibromyalgia affects and interfers with everyday living that most people take for granted like sex, preganancies, jobs, sleep, and many, many more.

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a type of arthritis and it is the most common arthritis-related condition after osteoarthritis. It is a chronic pain disorder that affects people physically, socially, and mentally. Fibromyalgia is characterized as a syndrome because it is a collection of signs, symptoms, and medical problems that tend to occur together but they are not related to a specific identifiable cause such as dieases are. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain state in which the nerve stimuli causing pain originates mainly in the muscle. The pain increases upon on movement and the aggravation of fibromyalgia by strenuous exertion.

Its characteristics include widespread muscle and joint pain and fatigue as well as many other symptoms. Fibromyalgia can lead to depression and social isolation. The impact that comes from the tremendous physical and mental strains can lead to loss of work hours, income, relationships, and more.

With Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) the following symptoms commonly occur together:

widespread pain
decreased pain threshold or tender points
anxiety or depression
incapacitating fatigue

What causes fibromyalgia

While the underlying cause or causes of FM still remain a mystery, new research findings continue to bring us closer to understanding the basic mechanisms of fibromyalgia. Most researchers agree that FM is a disorder of central processing with neuroendocrine/neurotransmitter dysregulation. The FM patient experiences pain amplification due to abnormal sensory processing in the central nervous system. An increasing number of scientific studies now show multiple physiological abnormalities in the FM patient, including: increased levels of substance P in the spinal cord, low levels of blood flow to the thalamus region of the brain, HPA axis hypofunction, low levels of serotonin and tryptophan and abnormalities in cytokine function.

Recent studies show that genetic factors may predispose individuals to a genetic susceptibility to FM. For some, the onset of FM is slow; however, in a large percentage of patients the onset is triggered by an illness or injury that causes trauma to the body. These events may act to incite an undetected physiological problem already present.

The most common agreed upon causes of FMS by researchers are:

A genetic component, this disorder is often seen in families, among siblings or mothers and their children.
Fibromyalgia often occurs following a physical trauma, such as an acute illness or injury, which may act as a “trigger” in the development of the disorder.
Increasing attention is being devoted to the central nervous system as the underlying mechanism of FM. Recent studies have suggested that FM patients have generalized disturbance in pain processing and an amplified response to stimuli that would not ordinarily be painful in healthy individuals.

Exciting new research has also begun in the areas of brain imaging and neurosurgery. Ongoing research will test the hypothesis that FM is caused by an interpretative defect in the central nervous system that brings about abnormal pain perception. Medical researchers have just begun to untangle the truths about this life-altering disease.

Men vs. Women in fibromyalgia

There are more then 12 million Americans have FMS. Women are 10 times more likely to have FMS then men with ages ranging from 25-69. Most of them are women ranging in age from 25 to 60.

What are the fibromyalgia symptoms?

Fibromyalgia causes a person to ache all over and possible crippling fatique as if you had a severe case of the flu. In fact if you have a friend or loved one that does not quite understand your FMS then have them remember back to when they had the flu, then tell them to remember how bad their body ached all over. Once they can remember that then you tell them to multiply that by 10 and that is almost how bad your body aches all over.

Your muslces may feel like they have been overworked or like you pulled them without doing anything to them such as excercise. Your muscles can also sometimes twitch, having a burning sensation, or have a deep stabbing pain. There are specific trigger points or tender points on the body that may be painful to touch. You may also experience swelling, disturbances in a deep level or restful sleep, and mood disturbances or depression.

Some patients of FMS may have pain, achiness, and stiffness around the joints in the neck, shoulder, back, and hips. This can make it difficult for them to sleep or exercise. FMS can cause signs and feelings similar to osteoarthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis, but the pain of bursitis or tendinitis is localized to a specific area of or in the body. The feelings of pain and stiffness with FMS are widespread. Other fibromyalgia symptoms include:

abdominal pain
anxiety and depression
chronic headaches
difficulty maintaining sleep or light sleep
dryness in mouth, nose, and eyes
fatigue upon arising
hypersensitivity to cold and/or heat
inability to concentrate (called “fibro fog”)
incontinence
irritable bowel syndrome
numbness or tingling in the fingers and feet
painful menstrual cramps
poor circulation in hands and feet (called Raynaud’s phenomenon)
restless legs syndrome
pain or burning sensation in the heels of your feet
pain or burning sensation in your elbows
stiffness

Are there tests used to diagnose fibromyalgia?

No there are not any difinitive test such as x-ray’s, MRI’s, lab test, etc. to diagnoise FMS. The best way to make an accurate diagnosis is to rely on an comprehnsive physical examination done by your doctor will rely on a and your medical history. Your doctor will also use a “diagnosis of exclusion” which means the doctor will rule out other conditions that could cause similar symptoms.

Even though there are no specific medical test that can be done to diagnose FMS your doctor may run some specific blood tests to rule out more serious illnesses. For example, your doctor may ask for a complete blood count (CBC), your doctor may also ask for tests for chemicals, such as glucose, that can create problems similar to problems caused by FMS. A thyroid test is another one that may also be done, because an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause problems similar to FMS., which includes fatigue, muscle aches, weakness, and depression. Some other laboratory tests your doctor may use to rule out serious illnesses may include Lyme titers, antinuclear antibodies (ANA), rheumatoid factor (RF), erythrocyte (red blood cell) sedimentation rate (ESR), prolactin level, and calcium level.

Nest your doctor will use a “diagnosis of inclusio” which means your doctor will make sure your symptoms satisfy the diagnostic criteria for FMS outlined by the American College of Rheumatology. This criteria consist of widespread pain that persists for at least three months. Please note that widespread pain refers to pain that occurs in both the right and left sides of the body, both above and below the waist, and in the chest, neck, and mid or lower back.

The doctor will then assess the severity of related symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and mood disorders. This will help measure the impact FMS has on your physical and emotional function as well as on your overall health related quality of life.

Is there a cure or standard treatment for fibromyalgia?

There is no cure for FMs, and there is no treatment that will address all of the fibromyalgia symptoms. However, there has been a wide array of traditional and alternative treatments that have shown to be effective in treating this difficult syndrome. Treatment programs may include a combination of medications, exercises or both strengthening and aerobic conditioning, and behavioral techniques.

What medications are there to treat fibromyalgia?

According to the American College of Rheumatology, drug therapy for fibromyalgia primarily treats the symptoms, and does not cure FMS. The FDA has approved three drugs to treat FMS:

Lyrica
Cymbalta
Savella.

Lyrica-which is also used to treat nerve pain caused by shingles and diabetes, has shown to be effective in easing fibromyalgia pain for some patients.

Cymbalta & Savella-are in a class of drugs known as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).

Also the FDA states thet low doses of tricyclic compounds such as Flexeril, Cycloflex, Flexiban, Elavil, or Endep have been found effective in treating the pain of FMS. In addition, positive results have been shown with the antidepressants known as dual reuptake inhibitors ( Effexor). Ultram is a pain relieving medicine that may also be helpful.

Your doctor may also want to prescribe an antidepressant such as Prozac, Paxil, or Zoloft., these drugs may help relieve feelings of depression, sleep disorders, and pain. Recently, researchers have found that the antiepileptic Neurontin is promising for fibromyalgia treatment too.

The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), including COX-2 drugs, have not been found to be effective for treating FMS pain. Opioid pain medications are usually only prescribed if all other drug and non-drug options have been tried to failed to no avail. These are only prescribed as a very last resort, and only if the patient is truly in sever pain.

Are there alternative treatments for fibromyalgia?

There are some alternative therapies, although they are not well-tested, can help manage the symptoms of FMS. For instance I learned some very intersting techniques when I went to the FMS Clinic in Springfiel, Missouri that is associated with St. John’s Hospital like, therapeutic massage manipulates the muscles and soft tissues of the body and helps ease deep muscle pain, but this may not be right for everyone it will depend on that person tolerance of pain and touch. Also if you take a white cloth like a cloth diaper (it needs to be white and cotton so the dyes do not fade off onto you), a large Ziploc Baggie, and a small bottle of Castrol, you then place the cloth in the large baggie, pour then bottle of Castrol Oil in the bag and all over the cloth, then you place the zipped baggie in the microwave for 1-3 minutes (however hot you can stand it) and then you take it out of the microwave and apply to the area of pain or soarness and place a towl over it, it can relieve your aches or pains. This has worked for me but of the other patients that were there it did not work out to well for them. Something else you can do that might be effective, and I love to do is to take a bath as hot as you can stand it, and soak in it. This is not good for your skin because it can cause dry skin, but I will take the dry skin anyday over the pain. I have a whirlpool that I fill up with scolding hot water then I turn on the jets and the heat from the water and the massage from the jets feels so awesome.

Now the American Pain Society (APS) guidelines recommend moderately intense aerobic exercise at least two or three times a week. The APS panel also endorses clinician-assisted treatments, such as hypnosis, acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and chiropractic manipulation for pain relief.

Also along with alternative therapies, it’s important to allow time each day to rest and relax. Relaxation therapies such as deep muscle relaxation or deep breathing exercises may help reduce the added stress that can trigger fibromyalgia symptoms. Having a regularly scheduled bedtime is also important. Sleep is essential to let the body repair itself, even if you have trouble sleeping it is important that you go to bed at the same time each night, because even though you may not be sleeping you are resting your body.

Food combining and fibromyalgia

Food combining is a way of eating foods so that they do not “fight” against each other; most foods belong to one of these three groups;

Proteins
Neutral foods
Starchy foods

Fruits are treated separately, and starches and protein foods can be combined with neutral foods but they should not be with each other. This enables more efficient digestion, and has had a significant effect in many cases of arthritis, including FMS.

Now according to Lesley Martin, Nutritionist & Kinesiologist the following combining recommendations may be helpful:

Combine any protein foods with leafy, neutral or low-starch vegetables
Combine starchy foods with leafy or low-starch vegetables
Have milk alone or try it and see if it works for you with grain foods like breakfast cereals
Experiment to see if cheese works well with either fruit or vegetables, or try it with grains or egg dishes
Papaya and pineapple contain abundant enzymes that help digestion, so they may combine well with any of the food groups especially proteins
Try and see how nuts, seeds and unrefined oils combine with any of the foods groups
Depending on your digestive system, fruits may or may not be combined with seeds and nuts, grains or milk products

You do not need to combine in the same meal heavy or lighter proteins with starchy foods, such as beef with bread or potatoes. You can try being less strict and try a combination of a grain like brown rice with light proteins, or bread with eggs. Do not combine lighter protein foods with milk or milk products or have a dairy desert right after these proteins, nor should you combine raw fruit or fruit juices with slightly starchy vegetables or with any non-fruit meal. Lemon juice is an exception, otherwise best to keep to a separate meal or allow at least half an hour before eating fruit after a non-fruit meal. Also you do not need to have sweets with protein foods or immediately after a protein meal. Sweets include fruit, honey, maple syrup, and refined sugar. Pineapple and papaya are exceptions.

Healing fibromyalgia is essential and absolutely necessary, especially since fibromyalgia sufferers are twice as likely to get cancer. Fibromyalgia symptoms affect nine women for every one man and the possibility of getting Fibromyalgia increases with time. Often symptoms start after a traumatic event; it can be either physical or emotional; but in most cases there is no one specific incident that triggers the condition.

Is healing Fibromyalgia possible? Absolutely! While there isn’t a miracle pill that will make all your symptoms disappear, you can do a lot to improve the condition and the hurtful symptoms. For more information and sources please visit my site or my blog.

Many things can be done for you to help healing fibromyalgia symptoms. Most people will be tempted to take pain medication such as Tylenol and others. While these may help temporarily to ease the pain and stiffness, they are not a long term solution because they are just an illusion. In fact they only ad to prevent healing Fibromyalgia all together. There are also more powerful drugs available from your doctor such as Ultram, Prozac, Cymbalta and more. The pain Fibromyalgia causes can get you easily depressed. I remember spending my days either on my bed or the couch for 15 hours a day, accomplishing absolutely nothing, too tired to do anything and too hurt to fall into a deep sleep. Using pain medication or antidepressants, however, only prevents healing Fibromyalgia in the long run. To ad to this dilemma, doctors also prescribe anti-seizure drugs generally used for epilepsy to Fibromyalgia patients in an effort to reduce certain types of pain. These could be drugs such as Neurontin or Lyrica.

Healing Fibromyalgia has to begin from the inside, since that is where it started in the first place. A person with Fibromyalgia symptoms lives in a body in which the wires are crossed and the nervous system is utterly confused. Your nervous system is directly connected to your blood, which is directly linked to your liver. Putting drugs of any kind through our body, be it simple pain medication or mind altering seizure drugs puts you body in an even more baffled state while putting your liver in overdrive. Is it any surprise then that new research reveals that cancer risk is doubled for those suffering from Fibromyalgia?

Medication is an illusion giving you the impression that you’re feeling better when in fact you’re only temporarily numbing the pain. This temporary feel-good condition eventually rears its ugly head like a three-headed monster and will turn you towards other drugs to fix new problems.

The most important step to achieving healing Fibromyalgia is self-care. I cannot stress this enough! It certainly is more convenient and certainly speedier to reach for a pill, there are tons more healthier and fun things you can do by yourself to help increase your well being. Living a wholesome lifestyle as much as possible such as eating healthy food, eliminating all white sugars (sodas too) and all chemical additives (such as aspartame, equal and other artificial sweeteners), eliminate or competely limit caffeine, skip dairy until you are completely healed and do activities which you enjoy while pacing yourself. Be consistent by doing a little each day.

I can’t stress how critical it is for a Fibromyalgia sufferer to exercise every day. Without a doubt it may actually increase your tenderness at first but I promise in a few days or weeks the pain will lessen. Great forms of exercise to do be gentle with your body, such as swimming, easy hiking, walking, yoga. Hard exercise such as skiing, running or kickboxing might not be beneficial in healing Fibromyalgia at the beginning. Fatigue is one of the biggest challenges of Fibromyalgia, so make sure you get enough sleep. It helps to read a book one hour before going to bed and then meditating immediately before retiring. When I was sick with Fibromyalgia I put myself on a consistent schedule and stuck to it. I retired at the same time and got up at the same time each day. Your body will thank you for the routine. I drastically reduced non-beneficial stress and totally eliminated TV and stayed away from computers and cell phones for a while. Perhaps you can pick up yoga or gentle stretching exercises and definitely learn how to meditate.

Other approaches for healing Fibromyalgia might include alternative ways such as accupuncture, accupressure, lymphatic massages (stay away from the hard types of massages for a while). Other alternative methods might include a visit to a chircopractor, Reiki treatments and so forth.

The fibromyalgia Merry Go Round

In 1994, I had an accident that changed my life, forever. What happened is irrelevant but the results took me on a long and arduous journey of doctors, tests, and soul searching that led me to write this article.

I sustained a major trauma to my neck, which resulted in three pinched nerves and two herniated cervical discs. A “C” collar and painkillers got me through the initial accident but nothing could have prepared me for the lifetime of pain and anguish that was to follow, but not immediately.

As I said, initially, the damage was treated and all seemed “fixed” but I was not aware, that trauma such as this can have dormant effects for the victims. Ten years and two pregnancies later, I found myself in increasing, excruciating, and inexplicable pain accompanied with bouts of immobility.

I subsequently developed; bone spurs on both sides and a reversal of curvature on both ends of my spine, spinal canal stenosis and degenerative disc disease along with multiple bulging discs and arthritis from end to end.

What became odd, (skeletal issues aside, because that pain was/is continuous), was that some of the pain began to “move.” On one day, my left leg would just start hurting and it would last from a day to a month or two. Then, as quickly as it started, it would vanish only to reappear in another area of my body, again, staying an undetermined amount of time until simply disappearing.

I went from doctor to doctor and I finally realized that they did not know any more than I did about what was happening to me and at times, I did not believe they cared. This, of course, could be attributed to the doctor’s being afraid of misdiagnosis and the onslaught of lawsuits that such brings. Let us also face the facts, the disease itself it is an enigma. It plays hide and seek and masks itself as so many other problems, it makes it virtually impossible for a doctor, who wants irrefutable proof, to diagnose.

However, mental issues are the first avenue they all took, which is ironic because the pain and malaise gets so bad, you do start turning inward so that depression is a valid diagnosis but not the cause. When you are looking to a doctor for an answer about the pain you are in and he looks you dead in the eye and says, “You probably do hurt but because of your depression, it is not nearly as bad as you think it is”, well, that is when screaming and crying become part of your normal existence!

I became so distraught but determined that I even began to keep my own medical file so that I could instantly keep any new doctor up to date and they wouldn’t have to wait for tests, etc. to be sent to them. This came in handy several times, as I have had x-rays, cat scans (both with and without fusion), MRI’s, blood work, physical therapy, etc. and not all have been in the same state, let alone the same medical center.

I began to joke that I had had so much radiation that I should glow. However, joking aside, I have spent literally thousands of dollars of both my own and insurance companies, on the search for a diagnosis. This is no laughing matter considering the state of the health care system today.

I have seen GP’s, Rheumatologists, Endocrinologists, Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Orthopedic doctors and surgeons, cardiologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, ENT’s, Dentists, Chiropractors and Reiki Masters. This was all over a four-year period and yet at the end, there was still no definitive diagnosis.

Oh, I had several “revelations” from doctors such as; “You have the bone structure of a 70 year old woman,” “You could be paralyzed just by turning wrong,” “You can no longer work at anything strenuous,” “I’m over 60 and I don’t have near that many problems,” etc. To their benefit however, I did get a more accurate picture of what my spine is like and how I had to alter my lifestyle because of that alone, but none of them explained the “traveling pain.”

The problem with seeing all these different physicians is that it begins to appear that you are a “seeker”, a person simply looking for the next drug or a diagnosis (mental issue involvement again). Therefore, my solution to that was to stop taking all my pain meds and to not accept any prescriptions…I just lived with the pain, so to speak.

Finally, at the end of my rope, I headed to the internet and began my own research. I found that this really is not a good tool for someone with so many symptoms. If so prone, people could easily convince themselves that they have multiple diseases. Luckily, I am not prone but I did find a doctor that I thought could help me. She was within the state and when I called, she accepted me as a patient.

I forwarded a copy of my file to her office and a month later, my husband and I traveled to Chicago to meet with her. After an extensive 30-minute visit and exam, she proclaimed to me, “You are not crazy, you have fibromyalgia.”

The definition for fibromyalgia is:

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain in your muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue and multiple tender points — places on your body where slight pressure causes pain.

Fibromyalgia occurs in about 2 percent of the population in the United States. Women are much more likely to develop the disorder than are men, and the risk of fibromyalgia increases with age. Fibromyalgia symptoms often begin after a physical or emotional trauma, but in many cases, there appears to be no triggering event. (Mayoclinic.com)

My reaction was tearful because back, in the beginning – four years ago, I asked my family doctor if that was a possibility and was told, “That doesn’t even exist, and it is just a term used when no other diagnosis can be made.” So, here I am, being diagnosed with something that I was led to believe was a “dodge.” “Well, now what?”

This doctor assured me that it was real and that although there is not a cure, there are things you can do to alleviate some of the symptoms. I left with a feeling of, “I’m not crazy” and “I can make it better.”

However, there are so many aspects of this “syndrome” such as; IBS, Thyroid dysfunctions, memory loss, stumbling, vision problems, chest pain, weight fluctuation, sleep deprivation etc., each bringing their own host of problems with them. It makes it very difficult to know when you should actually see a doctor or write it off to the Fibromyalgia.

My personal “demons” are the memory loss and cognitive impairments that fall under the heading of “mental fog.” I suffer from this terribly. I find myself struggling with names of everyday, common things. I have put my mail in the refrigerator and the ice cream in the cabinet.

I also suffer from the sleep deprivation but this I have just learned to accept. It is nothing for me to still be up roaming the house at 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. and then be back up and moving by 6:00 or 7:00. I know that sounds like a good solid 4 or 5 hours of sleep but know this; I wake up every 2 hours, like clockwork. Broken sleep is never, ever a good thing and that is what I function on daily.

However, I have found that the absolute worst thing about this disease for me is that it severely limits my mobility. Because most activity causes flare ups, I am unable to interact with my young, active children, my husband and clean my house, as I would like. That same inability/inactivity has caused me to gain a tremendous amount of weight and the pain prohibits me to exercise it away.

I have other medical conditions that prohibit my taking most of the new prescriptions that are now “tagged” for Fibromyalgia but I am still pretty much convinced that there is no “magic pill” for it anyway. The more weight I gain and the more my husband, children and household suffer, the more I revert inward and the cycle of depression “flares up” as well.

Until the entire medical community gets behind the fact that this is a very real, dibilitating disease, and not a syndrome, no real advancements or cures will be found. In the meantime, suffering and depression are common for so many people and they do not even know why. It is a vicious and completely unfair cycle that needs to be broken, and soon.

If you suspect that Fibromyalgia is behind your problems, I suggest finding a rheumatologist. Keep looking and changing doctors until you find one that will listen to you, not just pacify you. Do not get discouraged (easier said than done, I know) but they are out there – the doctors that care and do their very best to help. There are also support groups, message boards and newsletters that can help.

Today, my pain is still horrible at times and I have several prescriptions that I have to take daily to control some of the subset illnesses, but at least I know that I am not alone and my diagnosis is real. I had to quit my job and now do a small, less strenuous job that is not enough but it keeps me somewhat active, mentally if nothing else.

The bottom line, trust in yourself and what you know about your own body. If you believe that what you are feeling is serious enough to seek a diagnosis, then keep going until you get it. There is something to be said for vindication and that is what my diagnosis felt like to me. I was “vindicated” when I was told I was not crazy and that my pain was real! Knowing is a major step toward helping yourself, even if there is no “magic pill” to fix it.
